Know When Carbohydrates Are Good For You!

By Andre Sylvester

Many weight loss programs take aim at carbohydrates to get your calorie intake down. Carbs have only 4 calories per gram, so they are less than half the calories per gram compared to fats. Carbs also provide your body with much of the energy it needs to stay in good condition. As with fats,

some carbs are better than others. Let's find out the differences to make sure you are getting the best carbs for your needs!

Complex Carbohydrates This type of carbohydrates are found in foods like pasta, grains, beans, vegetables and so on. The sugars in complex carbs are joined together in long strings. As a result, these carbs are high in fiber, low in fat and low in calories. You body takes a long time to process these carbs, so you feel full longer, and your blood sugar levels remain level.

Simple Carbohydrates Simple carbs usually have only a single or double sugar molecule. You can find these carbs in products like granulated sugar or processed foods like cookies, pastries and sodas. These simple sugars are also present in fruits. The key to simple sugars is that they are processed quickly by the body, giving you quick energy while your blood sugar level rises as well. This energy does not last long, so when blood sugar levels drop, you could end up in what is called a sugar crash. After this kind of a cycle, you feel tired and often hungry.

The big difference between simple sugars in fruits and those in processed foods is that fruit sugars are usually combined with more complex carbs, along with fiber and minerals. Processed foods usually don't have these other benefits.

What choices are best for you? In order to avoid the roller coaster effect of sugar highs and lows, you should stick to complex carbohydrates in your daily diet, including natural sugars from fruits. Try to eat the fruit in a natural form. It is better to eat an apple than drink apple juice, as you get additional fiber and vitamins. The same is true of bread products. Look for bread that is labelled "whole wheat", this ensures that you are not eating refined white bread with brown food coloring!

It is important to be smart about what you eat. Use the information here about carbohydrates to make smart choices for your diet that support your weight loss goals!
