Egg wash enhances photogenic qualities of a lot of what you bake.
This is great for Instagram! An egg wash is a mixture of egg and water used to brush onto your baked creations before going in the oven. Egg wash is perfect for getting sprinkled flavors to stick to the outer crust too. It's amazing how well your baked art shines with a golden brown finish. Yummy!

  • Brush onto the dough prior to baking.

Eggs:

Have you only been using eggs cooked as just eggs? Did you know that they can do so much more? Eggs are a versatile ingredient in the kitchen, and they're great for more than just breakfast. Here are several ways in which adding an egg wash can help improve your baked goods:

To Create Browned and Shiny Baked Goods:

If you want to create browned and shiny baked goods, eggs are a great way to go. They work like magic for all sorts of baked goods, from pie crusts and biscuits to scones and pastries.
Eggs help seal in moisture, creating a crispy crust on the outside while keeping your center moist and delicious. In addition, the protein in eggs provides structure for any type of bread or pastry dough. The yolk adds flavor while also adding color (as long as you don't bake too long).
Eggs are also great at creating that shiny surface we all know so well (think glazed donuts). When beaten with sugar, egg whites produce an airy foam that can be used as an icing or coating on cakes or cookies; try dipping your favorite chocolate chip cookie in this stuff! But, let's get back to our favorite Bucket of Bread uses...

To Create Browned, Shiny Crusts for Baked Goods:

To create a browned, shiny crust on baked goods:
  • Use a brush to apply the egg wash.
  • Try a sprinkle of kosher salt or other flavorings after applying.

To Help Make Baked Goods Perfectly Crispy:

To make a perfectly crispy crust or pastry, use an egg wash.
The best way to apply an egg wash is with a pastry brush, but you can also use your fingers or even spray from a bottle.

Just Keep Some Eggs in Your Fridge at All Times:

It's true, eggs are a great food to have on hand at all times. They're a good source of protein and vitamins, which makes them a staple in the American diet. A single egg has about 6 grams of protein, so if you had an egg for breakfast every morning for a year (and don't forget to eat other things), you'd get more than half your daily recommended value of 9 grams. Eggs also contain iron and vitamin B12—both nutrients that help keep your energy up throughout the day.
For anyone with dietary restrictions or allergies, eggs are also great because they're versatile: You can eat them fried or scrambled; hard-boiled or poached; soft-boiled or sunny side up—the list goes on!
